Kuhio Shores Frequently Asked Questions

Kuhio Shores:

Is there a Sandy Beach at Kuhio Shores?

Yes, there is a small beach on each side of Kuhio Shores. Both are easy to walk to and are nice for sunbathing. There is also a beautiful large grassy area surrounding the building that is ideal for sunning or ocean watching on beach towels or chairs. Kuhio Shores is located less than 2 miles from Poipu Beach Park where there are showers, lifeguards, a baby beach, concessions, and the #1 rated beach in America.

Can I swim in the ocean at Kuhio Shores?

You can swim in the ocean from either side of Kuhio Shores. Most people enter the ocean from the beach on west side of the building next to the Beachhouse restaurant. Surfers generally enter in front of the restaurant where they can get down from the seawall.
Snorkelers and more advanced swimmers can enter the bay on the east side of the building. The best place to enter is just by the small sandy spot by the road. There is a very narrow spot that you can get in the water between the rocks. This is a popular place for seeing Hawaiian Sea Turtles. Local guide shops bring groups of snorkelers there almost daily to see them.
Be advised that there is often a current that runs in front of the building from the bay over to the Beachhouse restaurant (east to west). You might find that if you get out past the seawall on the bay it can sometimes pull you over to the beach on the other side of the building. If you find yourself being pulled toward the restaurant, don't fight it. It's best to just drift with the current and get out once you get to the beach. I suggest you observe the conditions and study other swimmers before you get in the water. (This is always a good idea in the ocean.)
The bottom is mostly rocky and hard on your feet. Be careful not to step on sea urchins as they have painful spines that can puncture your skin and break off.
